An ancient village
Rosscarbery, lying roughly half way between Clonakilty and Skibbereen, is one of the prettiest villages that Ireland has to offer, and its central location makes it an ideal base for exploring West Cork (see map).
It is an ancient village, having been the site of a monastery founded by Saint Fachtna in the 6th Century, which became renowned throughout Europe for its learning and an important centre of pilgrimage. The village’s cathedral, named after the saint, is a continuing legacy of that heritage.
The surrounding countryside bears witness to an even more ancient settlements, with a rich display of prehistoric remains, including dolmens, raths, stone circles, and inscribed stones.
Rosscarbery has a lot to offer visitors, whether in search of simple relaxation or things to do. Nearby activities include:
• Local blue flag beach or in the indoor leisure centre at the Celtic Ross Hotel • Scenic walks • Bird & wildlife watching • Historical tours sites to view • Pitch and putt • Fishing Boating and Deep Sea Fishing trips organised • Pony trekking • Michael Collins • Memorial Sailing & Kayaking • Stone Circles & Ring Forts • Children’s Playground • Tennis Court
